Norma, NJ was founded in May 1882, when 43 Jewish refugee families arrived from Russia to escape the pogroms that were taking place there at the time.  Immigrants from Italy, including Valle San Giovanni, later settled in Norma during the early part of the 20th century.

There is one school in Norma.  It is part of Pittsgrove Township School district and serves approximately 150 students in Preschool and Kindergarten.

The Norma Recreation area is located on Gershal Avenue at the site of Norma School.  It has basketball courts and a baseball field available for public use.

Relgious services are held at the Brotherhood of Norma Synagogue and the Norma Mennonite Church.  The annual Norma Day, held in September each year is enthusiastically attended by individuals making the journey from all over Salem County.

Well known landmarks in this community include the Volunteer Fire/Rescue Squad and a post office where in past years the customers were able to lick the stamp on themselves.
